2016 Olympic Games

At Ellanbrae Park, you won’t find horses bred to carry the blood of Bundeschampionate or World Young Horse Championship winners. Nor the season’s fashionable young newly licensed stallions from Europe. For us, the goal is to produce horses capable of reaching the top end of the sport, the Grand Prix. And so the pedigrees of our precious mares and their offspring are full of proven, licensed stallions who have not only competed at GP, but also many who have competed at the top in GP – WEG, the European Championships, and the Olympics – and/or have produced horses who have competed at that level.

As I sit this week watching the Olympics and casually flicking through The Horse Magazine, Chris Hector’s usual breeding analysis of horses on the long list for the Olympics catches my eye. And so I do a quick analysis of our own breeding mares and their offspring, both here and those still in Europe (we have 23 horses that fall into this category).

Of course Chris starts with the incomparable Donnerhall. Eleven of our horses carry Donnerhall blood, mostly through the top producer De Niro (10 horses long listed), Don Schufro (2 horses long listed) or Diamond Hit (4 horses long listed).

Voice, another spectacular stallion competing at Rio by De Niro – we have 1 Voice mare, as well as a youngster by the half brother of Voice.

Horizonte De Jeu (Voice x Don Romantic x Contango x Rubinstein)

Chris then moves on to another of the incomparable GP producers, Jazz (6 horses long listed). Ten of my horses carry Jazz blood.

W Esther De Jeu (Rousseau x Jazz x Ulft)

Johnson (by Jazz) has always been one of my favourite stallions – we are blessed to have a Johnson daughter in our breeding herd, who seems to cross exceptionally well with De Niro.

Larapinta Johanna (Johnson x Metall x Concorde)

Next Chris looks at Rubinstein. Fifteen of our horses carry Rubinstein blood Many of these are through another of my favourite stallions Rohdiamant (1 long listed).

Ellanbrae Benito Gold (Belissimo M x Rohdiamant x Diamond Hit)

We already have one OO Seven (1 long listed) youngster but we are expecting 2 more extremely special ones this season. And of course not to forget Riverdance (1 long listed), with 3 descendents in our program.

Ellanbrae Jeniro (De Niro x Johnson x Metall) and Ellanbrae James Bond (OO Seven x Johnson x Metall)

Interestingly, Chris gives some time in his article to the renowned damsire, Contango (not to be confused with Contango II who stood in Australia). We are lucky to have one mare carrying Contango on the damline.

Strangely, Chris does not mention Ferro, but I’m confident that there are a number of Ferro descendents at Rio (Valegro for one…). Thirteen Ellanbrae mares and youngstock carry Ferro blood (mostly through Metall (the sire of Carl Hester’s London mount Uthopia) and Rousseau, with one through Negro).

Zonkara De Jeu (Rousseau x Jetset D x Rubinstein)

Chris looks then at studbooks with the highest numbers – KWPN has the highest representation in the long list (Ellanbrae has 16 KWPN registered horses). Followed by Oldenburg (6 Ellanbrae horses), then Hanoverian (1 Ellanbrae horse).

Chris’ analysis focuses on the representation of stallions in the bloodlines, but we cannot forget the importance of the damlines. Ellanbrae has invested heavily in the starting point, its mares. One of our imported broodmares (Emma – Rohdiamant x Diamond Hit) had a daughter who last might made the champions ring at the National Mare Keuring in the Netherlands and ended placed 7th – that’s 7th for the whole of the Netherlands for her year.  Another of our imported broodmares (Zonkara De Jeu – Rousseau x Jetset D) is the half sister to the champion (Eskara De Jeu) of the National Mare Keuring of 2012.

Emma (Rohdiamant x Diamond Hit x Ex Libris)

Its is a long way from foal to the highs of GP at the top level, but we believe that many of the youngsters being born here at Ellanbrae Park have what it takes to get there. We have a vision that an Ellanbrae bred horse will one day represent Australia at the Olympics. On Chris Hector’s breeding analysis of the horses long listed for the 2016 Rio Olympics, we are on the right track.

We currently have a number of youngsters available for sale in Australia, as well as a few in the Netherlands. Please have a look through at our website for full details, photos, videos and pricing of these super youngsters. We also have a couple of horses under saddle that we would consider selling if the right buyer came along, please feel free to contact us.

I have found my dream horse to take on this journey to GP.  Perhaps yours is growing in one of Ellanbrae’s paddocks…

Rubingold (Rohdiamant x Serano Gold x Diamond Hit x Ex Libris)
